choosing your cocker spaniel puppy
Cocker from Celyn's Cockers
What Responsible Breeders Look for in You When you buy a Cocker Spaniel from a responsible breeder you can expect that they are going to have a lot of questions for you. They are concerned for the welfare of their puppy, and the breeder will want to be sure that you are the right person to trust as it's guardian. Here is a list of some of the questions that you might be asked:
- Do you own a Cocker or have you ever?
- Do you have other pets that aren't puppy friendly?
- Is your Vet someone you feel is comfortable with your breed choice? Please provide your current or past vets’ names and phone numbers.
- How are you and your family around your other pets? (Positive reinforcement, etc.)
- Do you have children or grandchildren that will be in contact with your new puppy? What are their ages?
- Do you have a secure yard that is clear of any possible dangers for a young pup? (most plants that flower are toxic. Garden & pool chemicals need to be stored in secured area, wires from outside air conditioner unit, above ground sprinkler wires, etc.)
- Do you have any unsecured bodies of water that would be accessible to a puppy?
- Any smokers in your home?
- Does anyone in your home have allergies?
- Are you renting or are you purchasing your home. If renting, is your landlord aware of your intention to bring in a new family member? If you live in a co-op or condominium are dogs allowed?
- Do you know of any county or city ordinances that set a limit on how many dogs are allowed on your property?
- Are your current dogs kept in kennel runs only and are they clean and safe? Are they kept in kennel combination house? Are they house only dogs with a yard for exercising? If in a town home, does your work schedule allow time for walking and exercising your dog/dogs?
- What types of a lifestyle will you expect your new puppy to adapt to? Boating, hiking, vegging on the sofa, camping, sports events, etc.?
- Are you prepared to take your new puppy through kindergarten class, etc.?
- Are you a member in good standing with local Cocker Spaniel club? If not, would you be interested in joining?
- Do you have or will you purchase a safety restraint for use in the car?
